Morwong

Morwongs are a comon sight for divers all along the NSW coast.

Red Morwong are often seen resting on the bottom.

Flathead

Sand Flathead are not always seen by divers but are often just under the sand. Look for their outline shape, fins and eyes.

Yellowtail Scad

Yellowtail are common at Sydney dive sites, sometimes small schools other times there can be thousands.

Eastern Pomfred

Pomfreds can be found under ledges and in caves in areas that have lots of rocks and boulders, sometimes they form large schools and come out into the open.

Octopus

Octopus are members of the Cephalopod family which includes cuttlefish and squid.They can usually be found hiding under rocks with a nest of shells in front, look for their eyes or the suckers on their tentacles, they can sometimes be enticed out by tapping your fingers in front them.

Grey Nurse Shark

Grey Nurse Sharks congregate at locations up and down the NSW coast at certian times of the year. They are fearsome looking but not suited to hunting large prey so pose no threat to divers. When diving with them it is advised to aproach carefully and not make sudden movments so you don't scare them away.

Port Jackson Shark

Port Jackson Sharks can be seen year round in Sydney but are much more numerous and easier to find when the water temprature drops below 18c.

Wobbegong Shark

Banded Wobbegong
Wobbegongs are often seen by divers, usually lying motionless on the bottom or under rocks and ledges. There are eight different species of wobbegong, the Banded and Spotted are the two most common in NSW.

Spotted Wobbegong
Spotted Wobbegongs are the ones usually encountered on the reefs around Sydney. Wobbegongs don't attack divers unless provoked or accidentally kicked, so look but don't touch. Night dives are sometimes good for seeing Wobbegongs.

Giant Cuttlefish

Australian Giant Cuttlefish are members of the Cephalopod family which includes octopus and squid. They are fascinating creatures that change colour and texture to blend into the environment or reflect their mood. Usually they hide under rock ledges, sometimes they are a bit more interactive.

Weedy Seadragon

Weedy Seadragons are a common sight for Sydney scuba divers but can be hard to find. The best place to look for them is below 10 meters in and around kelp. They are good at concealing themselves and surprisingly fast swimmers

Blue Groper

Easter Blue Gropers are a common sight to snorkelers and scuba divers in NSW the large blue ones are mature males that swim right up and look you in the eye, the smaller green brown ones are females that swim away or hide when you approach. The males are territorial and dont like other males in their area. When some of the females grow larger they change into males, all the juveniles are female.
